Judge Abbi Silver is a lifelong resident of southern Nevada. She grew up in Boulder City and graduated from Clark High School in Las Vegas. In 1986, Judge Silver received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In 1989, she received her Juris Doctor degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles, California.
From 1989 to 1990, Judge Silver passed the bar exams in both California and Nevada while working as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Earle White, Jr., Eighth Judicial District Court judge. In 1990, she joined the Clark County District Attorney’s office as a deputy district attorney.
From 1994 until 2003, Judge Silver was assigned to the Special Victim’s Unit of the District Attorney’s Office. She specialized in murder cases involving children and domestic violence, sexual assault cases of children and adults, child and elderly abuse cases, aggravated stalking cases and domestic violence cases.
In 1998, then-District Attorney Stewart Bell promoted her to chief deputy district attorney in the newly created Domestic Violence and Aggravated Stalking Division of the Special Victim’s Unit. For five years, Judge Silver supervised this unit consisting of attorneys, investigators, process servers, secretaries and clerks in cases involving murder, domestic violence, stalking and child and elderly abuse.
In 2002, she was nominated by Nevada Senator John Ensign and appointed by United States Attorney General John Ashcroft to serve as Nevada’s representative on the National Advisory Board-Violence Against Women and Children.
Judge Silver has served as the special prosecutor of Humboldt County on a double homicide case and for Lyon County on a child sexual assault case. She also prosecuted and obtained convictions against the stalkers of Senator John Ensign, Senator Harry Reid, entertainer Jerry Lewis, former-Sheriff Jerry Keller and casino owner Stephen Wynn.
In 2003, Judge Silver was elected to the Las Vegas Municipal Court. In 2006, Judge Silver was elected to Las Vegas Justice Court.
In 2009 and 2014, Judge Silver was elected to the Eighth Judicial District Court for the State of Nevada. During her six-year tenure, she presided over 10,000 felony cases and approximately 4,000 civil cases. Judge Silver also presided over one of the largest verdicts (over 100 million dollars) in Nevada's history in a mass tort case against the Endoscopy Clinic of Southern Nevada, taking almost four months at trial.
In 2015, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval appointed Judge Silver after her nomination by the Nevada Judicial Selection Committee to the Inaugural Court of Appeals of Nevada. In the first year as a judge on the Nevada Court of Appeals, she and her colleagues adjudicated almost 700 cases (criminal, civil and family law) to alleviate the long backlog of cases that existed with the Nevada Supreme Court. In doing so, Judge Silver has been fair, impartial, and expeditious, working hard for all litigants in processing cases within the appellate system.
Judge Silver has judicial chambers in both Carson City and Las Vegas, but resides with her family in Las Vegas.
